“Unbelievable” comes on the radio as you scramble to grab your cassette tape to record the chart-topper. Dances with Wolves is coming soon to VHS, parachute pants and platform shoes are high fashion, and life is simple. The year is 1991.
Today, the 90s are making a comeback in a big way – we’re looking at you, high-rise, acid wash denim and reboots of popular sitcoms and movies. And, while a lot has changed in 30 years, there’s something to be said for ‘the good old days’. The days before internet sleuthing. The days before overanalyzing your own personality and appearance. The days before researching ‘best dating app one-liners’ to seem witty and charming to a swiping stranger.
It almost makes you wish dating today was a little more like the 90s. Here are a few things we wish would come back to the 2021 dating scene.
You Oughta Know
Today, a quick Google search of your date’s name is customary to find out what the two of you have in common and identify red flags. Sounds innocent enough, but this research often creates preconceived notions or expectations about the other person before even meeting, which can be difficult to overcome.
In the 90s, you learned about the other person through questions, conversation, and body language during a first date. It was up to you to find a common connection – no social media shortcuts!
I Don’t Wanna Wait
Now, many singles get stuck in the endless messaging phase – always communicating with a potential partner, yet still waiting for that first or second date that never comes to fruition.
Decades ago, before instant messaging, if you liked someone you went on real, in-person dates and spent your time talking on the phone until your next outing together.
Good Riddance
One of the most dreaded parts of a break up today is the inevitable online status change – single. You might as well shout it from the virtual rooftops.
Back then, the only way for someone to know if your relationship fizzled out would be for you to tell them. Who would have known breaking up in private would be such a luxury?
Regardless of the decade, we believe the only way to discover if there is chemistry with someone is through a real, face-to-face date. Talk to a matchmaker today to start dating.
